Athens is likely the first European city where you’ll notice numerous stray cats that seem to belong to the entire community. Whether they’re lounging on ancient pillars, gazing out from the Parthenon, or napping in the greenery of archaeological sites, these furry friends also manage to keep the rat population in check while happily accepting ear scratches.
The people of Greece adore their cats and are not shy about showing their affection. If you’re looking for some feline companionship, your best bet is around Thiseio, where the Ancient Agora provides a large refuge and the nearby restaurants along Adrianou Street might offer them a tasty treat. Another great spot is the restaurant Dióskouroi, located between the Ancient Agora and the Acropolis. Here, you can enjoy a Freddo Espresso while a friendly tabby cat circles around your legs. The most affectionate and velvety soft cat we encountered was in the charming garden behind the Byzantine Museum, resembling the Egyptian goddess Bast.
With so many adorable cats in Athens, you’re bound to find your own favorite. Now go and give them some love!
