Cycling the Scenic Maare-Mosel Trail: A Biker’s Paradise in Moselle

The Moselle region, located in the southwestern corner of Germany, is renowned for its stunning landscapes. Its name comes from the Moselle River, which winds its way from Koblenz to Trier over roughly 200 kilometers. Just north of Moselle, you’ll find the Eifel region, known for its ancient volcanic activity. Some of the hills here are actually volcanic vents, and you’ll spot circle-shaped lakes, called maars, that formed within volcanic craters.

For cycling enthusiasts, the European Travel Team has explored the area on bicycles and offers recommendations for various cycling routes. Whether you’re into high-energy mountain biking or planning a leisurely cycling vacation along the Moselle cycle route, their articles provide valuable insights.

One of the most popular routes is the Maare-Mosel cycle trail. This 55 km path is considered one of the most beautiful and well-known cycling routes in the Middle Moselle. It begins in Daun, located in the Vulkaneifel district, and passes through Wittlich before reaching Bernkastel-Kues by the Moselle River. The trail follows an old railway path through landscapes dotted with ancient maars and volcanoes, over impressive viaducts, and past historic railway stations. From Wittlich onwards, it runs alongside the Lieser River as it meanders through a peaceful valley where the vineyards of the Moselle begin to appear. The trail then gently continues to Bernkastel-Kues, following the Moselle cycle path.

The trail descends steadily and can be completed in about three hours. However, there’s much to explore along the way. You’ll find plenty of rest spots, viewpoints, and local eateries inviting you to take a break. The “Bike-Adventure-Loops” are additional paths you can add to your journey, allowing you to tailor the length and theme of your ride. Exploring some of the volcanic crater lakes will reward you with fantastic views.

For added convenience, a special cyclists’ bus operates between Bernkastel-Kues and Daun from April to November, running up to ten times a day, making it easy to return to your starting point.
