Picture the Mecklenburg Lake District in autumn, with its trees adorned in shades of yellow, red, and brown, their leaves carpeting the ground. The air is lightly hazy, and there’s a gentle breeze that leaves the lakes’ surfaces undisturbed, perfectly mirroring the autumn scenery above.
This stunning region in northeastern Germany is known for its lakes, which are just as captivating as the fairy-tale renaissance castles and charming medieval cities from the old Hanseatic league. Join us as we explore the best of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Focusing on the lakes, this area boasts the highest number of lakes in Germany, including the largest one. In summer, the region is alive with German hikers, bikers, surfers, and skippers. Spring is an ideal time to explore the many nature parks and cities. Autumn offers the perfect setting for long lakeside or woodland walks, followed by cozy evenings by the fireplace with a glass of hot glühwein. And though Lübeck and Berlin host the largest Christmas markets in December, the Hanseatic towns of Wismar, Rostock, and Stralsund offer particularly unique atmospheres for their holiday markets.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, wrapping yourself in a warm blanket with a cup of cocoa and enjoying the sunset is equally delightful.
Our visit to the region in early October rewarded us with warm weather and sunshine. We enjoyed strolling next to the medieval walls of Rostock, with leaves crunching underfoot and others gently falling like yellow snowflakes. One afternoon, after cycling around 15 kilometers to Güstrow Castle, we relished flammkuchen, paired with beer and wine, at a sunny, sheltered spot for lunch. The following day, we climbed the 126 steps of the observation tower at Krakow-Am-See to take in the breathtaking views of the lakes.
