The Moselle region is one of Germany’s most picturesque corners, located in the southwestern part of the country and defined by the winding Moselle River. The river stretches about 200 kilometers from Koblenz to Trier, offering perfect landscapes for mountain biking with stunning views and great exercise. Here are our tips for enjoying the best mountain biking in Mosel.
Having explored the area on our own bikes, we present our top three recommendations for different cycling trips. For more cycling options in the region, check out our articles on the 55-kilometer Maare-Mosel cycle trail or the 200-kilometer Moselle cycle route.
Mountain Biking
Moselle’s trails feature challenging climbs, steep descents, narrow paths, and breathtaking vistas. With several thousand meters of altitude changes, these trails are ideal for mountain bikers seeking a sporty holiday amid vineyards and woods. After a few hours of climbing hills and zipping through forests on single trails, you’ll find plenty of spots to eat, drink, and relax, as many mountain biking routes overlap with hiking trails.
Roman Wine Route
This holiday region offers over 200 kilometers of mountain biking tracks, with five main routes ranging from 27.9 to 76.3 kilometers. The altitude differences, from 718 meters to 2119 meters, ensure you’ll encounter some challenging terrain without having to visit the Alps.
Mountainbike Trailpark Mehring
The Mountainbike-Trailpark-Mehring features five color-coded trails based on difficulty. The park is open from March 1st to October 31st and closes during rain, with free entrance for all.
Premium Bike Trail
We tried the “Zwei Schanzentour,” a demanding 30-kilometer mountain bike route certified as a Premium Bike Trail by Deutsche Initiative Mountainbike (DIMB). This trail mainly goes through forests but also offers fantastic views of the Moselle Valley. The tour is well-marked and can be split into two stages. Though we had to cut our ride short at 15 kilometers and return to Bernkastel-Kues, the route demands good conditioning, technical skills, and an adventurous spirit. It provides amazing views and an unforgettable experience.
There are other mountain bike trails around Bernkastel-Kues with varying lengths and skill requirements, all well-signposted.
