Located on a rocky outcrop at the edge of the Les Alpilles mountain range in central Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence is a stunning medieval village topped with castle ruins. This gem of Provence is known for its stone fortress and the Carrières de Lumières art exhibition, which is also set within the rock. So, what are the must-see attractions in one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”? Here’s our guide:
Medieval Village
The area has been settled since 6000 BC, but the village you see today is a quintessential medieval Provençal village built from grey stone and solid rock. To the north, the low mountain range of Les Alpilles serves as a picturesque backdrop and natural protector against the strong Mistral wind, which can be so intense that it drives people crazy.
Looking to the south, the flat plains of the Camargue offer incredible views from the village’s vantage points, especially from the medieval castle ruins that blend seamlessly into the surrounding rocks. The village is so well camouflaged that it’s hard to spot as you approach.
Fewer than 20 residents live in this tiny village, likely serving the 1.5 million tourists who visit each year. The atmosphere is cozy, with small souvenir shops selling typical Provençal items like lavender and soap. For food, you have options ranging from 2-star Michelin restaurants to casual cafeterias and snack bars. Cultural interests can be satisfied with visits to the various small museums, charming churches, and art galleries. The highlight, however, is…
Carrières de Lumières
This is unlike any other multimedia art show you’ve seen, and it’s truly unforgettable. Housed inside an old stone quarry at the village’s base, you enter through a door, pull back a curtain, and step into a dark hall. Suddenly, images are projected onto the massive walls and stone floor, accompanied by the powerful music of Carmina Burana.
The works of Renaissance masters like Hieronymus Bosch, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and the Bruegels come to life all around you, making you feel as though you’re walking inside their paintings. The soundtrack ranges from classical music to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” giving you goosebumps for the entire two-hour show. It’s a must-see if you’re in Provence!
Les Baux-de-Provence is the only “Plus Beaux Villages de France” in the Bouches-du-Rhône region. However, nearby gems like Gordes and the ochre village of Roussillon are also worth a visit. Check out our separate articles on those for more information.
