When we finally arrived in Aquitaine, the southwestern part of France with Bordeaux as its capital, we were greeted by the serene Dordogne River. The river winds its way through the region, shaping the valleys and offering stunning views of castles perched on steep cliffs.
Rocamadour is a must-visit with its breathtaking views and free entry, which is quite rare around here. The town clings dramatically to the cliffs, and as you descend from the top, you will encounter numerous religious shrines along the path.
This region is also famous for its culinary delights, including truffles, Cahors wines, and foie gras. If the food isn’t enticing enough, the beautiful scenery and grand castles certainly are. From Chateau de Hautefort in the north to the spectacular Beynac and Chateau des Milandes on the banks of the Dordogne River, the sights are truly captivating.
Rocamadour, our current stop, offers amazing views, shrines, and free entrance. For those willing to spend a little, the Rochers des Aigles is a fantastic bird of prey center with impressive falconry shows. The churches and buildings, fortified by the rock and perched on the mountainside, provide incredible views that may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights.
Continuing on, we plan to indulge in the culinary delights further south and west towards the vineyards of Cahors, St. Emilion, and finally Bordeaux. Delicious adventures await!
