Klis: A Fortress of Flavor and Thrones

Anita Palada takes us on a journey back in time to the Klis Fortress, nestled in the historical Dalmatian region. This imposing fortress has not only witnessed numerous battles but also served as a last stand against the Ottoman forces for decades. Rising above the city of Split, it holds a legacy that’s even more fascinating than its depiction in Game of Thrones as the city of Meereen.

A new day breaks over Mosor mountain, casting its first light towards Klis. Within the fortress walls, peace is fleeting. Soldiers stand guard, women light fires inside their stone houses, and men look after the stables. Suddenly, the ground trembles from the thunderous approach of horses. The soldiers brace for another attack, knowing the ferocity of the Ottoman forces.

The battle commences as arrows fly, swords clash, and bullets ring out. The defenders pour hot oil over the walls, repelling the attackers once more. The strong and proud Uskok soldiers successfully protect their fortress.

Filip Ninčević and Damir Žura, modern-day Uskok soldiers, re-enact these battles annually with great zeal, bringing history to life. As Jakov Vetma, a local leader, explains, the Klis Fortress is a symbol of the region’s enduring spirit through countless victories and defeats.

Situated atop a steep gorge, the Klis Fortress offers breathtaking views of the surrounding towns and islands. Its strategic location and rich history have always attracted visitors and invaders alike.

Traditional dishes from the area are prepared in open fireplaces, adding a distinct smoky flavor to the food. The famed Klis lamb, bread, and uljenjak pies are local delicacies. Klis women continue to make desserts using recipes passed down through generations, using ingredients like figs, raisins, citrus peels, olive oil, and almonds.

Chef Deana Miletić takes these traditional recipes to new heights in her charming kitchen, experimenting with flavors to create unique cakes and jams that capture the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. She combines local fruits and herbs into delightful gastronomic creations.

At the Stella Croatica estate, the Polić family blends modern and traditional methods to create a unique eco-village experience. Guests can sample homemade cheeses, olive oil, and desserts while learning about the region’s culture and traditions. The area’s rugged beauty and historical significance create a captivating atmosphere that seamlessly integrates the past and present.

The Klis Fortress also gained fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones, where it represented the city of Meereen. Fans can explore the fortress and discover other local treasures like the ancient “tomato wells,” unique karst formations that have stood the test of time.
