A Journey Through the Charm of Bruges

A Journey Through the Charm of Bruges

Bruges, locally known as Brügge, is just a short trip across the English Channel and about an hour’s drive north of Brussels. We visited this charming medieval town in late March and were met with a nostalgic atmosphere. The damp cobblestone streets glistened despite the cloudy weather, and the sight of a graceful white swan against dark waters, coupled with the light fog embracing the old buildings, was truly mesmerizing.

Brick houses, cobblestone streets, and canals set the scene for a wonderful experience. Whether you’re interested in history, medieval architecture, culture, or simply enjoying some excellent beer while watching the world go by, Bruges has something to offer. Here are our top 5 things to do in Bruges:

1. Brewery Tour: Belgium is a haven for beer lovers, but it’s also delightful for those who aren’t particularly fond of beer, thanks to fruit beers like Framboise or Kriek, made with raspberries and cherries, respectively. Traditionally brewed using lambic beer, these fruit beers undergo a re-fermentation process that leaves them with a fruit flavor sans sweetness, resembling a sour cider. We took a guided tour at De Halve Maan brewery in Bruges’ historical center. The 45-minute tour, costing 9€, was both fun and educational, ending with a taste of their beer by a cozy fireplace. If the weather is nice, their charming courtyard is perfect for enjoying a drink and resting your legs.

2. Canal Tour: No visit to Bruges is complete without a canal boat tour. Despite initial hesitations, we found it incredibly fun, especially synchronized with other tourists’ camera flashes and cheerful waves. We took the tour between rain showers and were rewarded with a sunny, leisurely experience among coots and cobbles. Floating just above the murky waters and nearly touching the old bridges adds a unique perspective to the city. The tour guide shared facts and folklore in English and French.

3. Basilica of the Holy Blood: Tucked away in the corner of Burg Square next to the city hall, this 12th-century basilica allegedly holds a relic of the Holy Blood. The basilica has both a lower and upper chapel. The lower chapel, with its Romanesque architecture, is overshadowed by the Gothic upper chapel, which has been renovated multiple times. Though not large, the interior is intimate, with dashing colors and elegant arches that demand respect and awe. Every year on Ascension Day, the relic is the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Procession of the Holy Blood, a vibrant parade featuring historical scenes and biblical tales witnessed by thousands.

4. Markt Square: The square, naturally named Market, has been a hub since medieval times, though it was completely renovated in 1995. This renovation has only enhanced its charm, providing a beautiful stage for the surrounding old buildings. At night, the buildings are illuminated by golden spotlights, creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue sky. Markt is the heart of the city, perfect for people-watching. In colder months, warm up with hot grog or punch, and in summer, cool off with a beer at one of the many cafés. The square accommodates everyone, from cushioned seat lovers to teenagers on the Provincial Court stairs and elderly couples enjoying ice cream.

5. Shopping: After tours, church visits, and beer tasting, shopping is a must. Bruges offers great opportunities, especially for lace and chocolate. Handmade bobbin laces are quite expensive, but more affordable lace options from Asia are also available. For chocolate, the variety is endless, with options covering nuts, spices, and fruits in dark, milk, or white chocolate, shaped into hearts, rounds, rectangles, and more. Beer enthusiasts can find many local brews to take home. For those inspired by Bruges’ diverse history, the Flea Market, held every Saturday and Sunday, along with various Antique Shops, offer a chance to bring a piece of history back home. Each item has its own story, waiting to become part of yours.
