European Halloween Festivities

European Halloween Festivities

Halloween, which originated from the Irish celebration of Samhain with candles inside carved beet-roots rather than pumpkins, has become a popular celebration in America, and now Europeans are starting to embrace it too.

If you find yourself in Europe during this spooky season, don’t worry – there’s plenty of Halloween excitement to enjoy:

England – Oxford
Head to Oxford Castle for the annual Ghost Fest. They offer a range of activities like Trick or Treating, After Dark Dinners, and Ghost Hunts. Throughout October, there are events for all ages, such as Truth & Dare Tours, a Halloween midnight tour, family-friendly Trick or Treating, pumpkin carving during the half-term, and overnight Ghost Hunts.

Austria – Retz
Retz, known for its yearly pumpkin harvest, celebrates the Kürbisfest or pumpkin festival. The event includes pumpkin carving, parades, and parties.

Germany – Berlin
In Berlin, shops and stores along Karl Marx Allee are adorned with orange pumpkins and decorations like hairy spiders. From October 29 to November 4, check out the Fernsehturm, dubbed the “highest Bat Nest in Berlin,” where you can enjoy Halloween decorations alongside stunning city views. If you miss Halloween, the city starts gearing up for Christmas markets from late November.

Italy – Corinaldo
Corinaldo, in Italy’s Marche region, hosts “La Notte delle Streghe” or “The Feast of Witches” during the last week of October, transforming into the Italian Capital of Halloween.

Spain – Madrid
An American in Madrid amusingly noted that locals may take a more understated approach to Halloween costumes. Despite this, the city offers various events where you can experience their unique take on the holiday.

France – Paris
For a full-on American-style celebration, visit Disneyland Paris. Disney’s Halloween Party at Disneyland Park promises a family-friendly, spooky night-time experience.

Enjoy these Halloween festivities across Europe!
