Savoring History at Europe's Oldest Dining Establishment

Stiftskeller St. Peter in Salzburg is believed to be Europe’s oldest restaurant, dating all the way back to the year 803. We recently spent a delightful evening there in July, enjoying a wonderful meal. The restaurant has a stylish yet relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Even though we were casually dressed, we received excellent service. The beer, prosecco, wienerschnitzel, risotto, and the famous regional dessert, Salzburger Nockerln, were all superb!

Salzburger Nockerln is a delightful dish made up of three peaks of light and fluffy meringue-like soufflé. One portion is more than enough for an individual, and the one we shared could have easily satisfied a family of four, their dog, and their hamster.

The restaurant is situated next to the Stiftskirche St. Peter church, located at the base of Mönchsberg hill in Salzburg. The church and its surrounding cemetery are not only serene and picturesque but also served as a filming location for the classic movie The Sound of Music. In the film, the Von Trapp family hides in the cemetery to escape from the Nazis.

If you’re curious about Salzburg’s famous musical prodigy, Mozart, and his connection to chocolate, there’s more to discover!
