We just got back from a week in snowy, charming Austria. With perfect powder, clear blue skies, and jagatee to warm us up, Austria is perfect for skiers, snowboarders, and winter hikers.
We stayed in the quaint town of Mellau, a well-kept secret for years. Recently, they’ve added some new lifts, connecting the area with others and expanding their infrastructure. This means there are now over 50 ski runs to keep you entertained for days!
Despite the upgrades, the area remains authentic and hasn’t turned into a party hub like St. Anton. There are plenty of cozy mountain restaurants for lunch. We usually went for the goulash soup, but you can also bring your own food and enjoy it outside in the sun with a stunning view.
At the end of the day, we would ski down the “talabfahrt,” which takes you through the woods and over streams right to our pension. After a hearty dinner at one of the ten available restaurants and a nightcap like “Heisse Witwe” (hot widow), Feigerl, or “Beschwipste Helene,” we slept like babies.
Waking up to another blue sky the next morning truly satisfies a skier’s heart, ready for another day of adventure!
