If you’re craving some waterfront relaxation, Gironde has plenty to offer. Whether you’re into surfing on the wild Atlantic coast or taking a dip in the calm, family-friendly lakes just a few kilometers inland, this area has got you covered.
Everything here is super convenient: there are lots of bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants, bike paths, and places to rent gear. The only downside is that you’ll have to share the space with many other tourists since its close proximity to Bordeaux, Bayonne, and even San Sebastian in the Basque country makes it a popular spot for both French and European visitors.
We spent a few leisurely days in the seaside town of Arcachon, which served as our base for trips to Bordeaux and the nearby Merlot vineyards. The Arcachon Basin is famous for oyster farming, so many restaurants offer a tasting of six oysters with a glass of chilled white wine for under 10€.
Arcachon rose to popularity during the time of Napoleon III and later became a well-known winter spa destination for people with lung diseases. Because of this, you’ll find lots of beautiful, unique homes in the Ville d’Hiver, or Winter City, showcasing stunning architecture and offering great views of the Basin.
