I’ve got to give it to the Germans; they really know how to put together an amazing Christmas market! These markets are filled with hand-crafted Christmas decorations, Nuremberg gingerbread, pottery, woodcarvings, and all sorts of artisan treasures.
There are old-fashioned carousels and Santa Claus parades that make it a fun time for kids of all ages. You’ll also find beautifully decorated Christmas trees and traditional Christmas cribs.
The cozy wooden bars, with straw on the floor, serve warm drinks like glühwein, punch, hot chocolate, lumumba, and the pyromaniac’s favorite, Feuerzangenbowle. You can even choose to add a “schuss” – an extra shot of rum – depending on the weather and how many kids you need to keep an eye on.
When it comes to food, there’s no shortage of options. You can enjoy hearty bratwurst, kebabs, pizzas, and for those with a sweet tooth, crepes, candied nuts, gingerbread hearts, and the German mini-donut known as Schmalzkuchen.
We highly recommend checking out the Christmas markets in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Goslar, Quedlinburg, Dresden, Regensburg, Münster, and Lübeck. So, wherever you are in Germany during December, you’re bound to find some festive markets and delicious warm drinks!
