Close your eyes and imagine yourself standing on cobblestones in an old town center. The half-timbered houses look like gingerbread cottages from a fairy tale, softly lit with a dusting of snow on top. Bonfires light up the faces of smiling people, and carousels spin the children around while their families warm up at one of the many stalls selling hot drinks.
Breathe in and take in the scent of fir trees, caramelized almonds and apples, the spices of Lebkuchen, and the sweet, alcoholic aroma of Glühwein and Punsch.
Open your eyes—you’re in the Harz region of Germany. This area is full of medieval history, stunning nature, charming towns, and a fairy-tale atmosphere. In December, when the days are short and the nights are long, you can almost feel the stories of the Grimm brothers come to life.
That’s why Christmas markets in Germany, especially in the Harz, are so cozy and heartwarming. People turn their backs on the darkness, come together, and celebrate in the various Christmas markets around the towns. And there are plenty to choose from.
In Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the charm is undeniable. It’s easy to see why it’s a favorite Christmas market for many Germans. People gather in the central square, Marktplatz, or wander through the temporary forest of fir trees in the Weihnachtswald. It’s a magical experience to get lost in the dark greenery with medieval architecture and Christmas carols in the background, all while enjoying warm Glühwein.
In Wernigerode, the medieval skyline is dominated by the castle, and the town center features the beautiful two-spire Rathaus in Marktplatz. Many old houses decorated with intricate wood-carvings surround the area. Marktplatz serves as the heart of the town, where Christmas celebrations and markets take place.
Quedlinburg, with its UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Collegiate Church, Castle, and Old Town, is a paradise for medieval enthusiasts. Unlike many places in former East Germany, Quedlinburg has largely preserved its medieval foundation and exceptional timber-framed buildings. This town offers a romantic Christmas experience with not just one market but an entire Advent City, where the whole town transforms into a big Christmas festival.
Merry Christmas to all!
