When Jocelyn Garwood, who travels full-time, found herself in the Algarve during winter, she was mesmerized by the sunrise and sunset skies. The beaches in Algarve are perfect for viewing these moments, with unobstructed views to the south. Jocelyn’s photos capture how nature’s beauty can outshine any art.
The Algarve is a true paradise, offering a mix of sun, sand, sea, cliffs, caves, and coves. The air is fresh, the cobbled lanes are fascinating, the locals are friendly, and in winter, there’s a soothing silence. But what impressed me the most were the shifting colors of the Algarve. The ochre cliffs, turquoise waters, and lush vegetation change hues throughout the day. The most stunning times are at dawn and dusk.
Dawn signals the beginning of a new day, while twilight marks its end. These moments made me appreciate the constant change in life and feel a bit insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Yet, being surrounded by such beauty brought a sense of joy, regardless of how fleeting the moment might be.
Though many places in the Algarve share these features, I’ll focus on Praia da Rocha in Portimão. Praia da Rocha has a fantastic viewpoint, Miradouro dos Três Castelos, at the promenade’s west end. This spot offers clear, panoramic views of the entire beach from east to west, making it perfect for capturing sunrises and sunsets.
There’s also easy access to the beach and cliff-top viewpoints, where you can enjoy the sky’s changing colors, perhaps with a drink at one of the nearby restaurants. No matter where you are, the winter skies at Praia da Rocha provide peace, quiet, and an unmatched display of colors.
