Scotland Encapsulated: Whisky in Six Letters

Throughout history, strong spirits have been known as the “Water of Life.” In Latin, this translates to Aqua Vitae. In Scandinavia, it’s Akvavit, and in Scotland, it’s known as Uisge Beatha. If you say that last one quickly after a drink, it’ll sound like – you got it: Whisky!

In this rugged and beautiful part of Britain, the weather swings from rain, fog, and wind to clear blue skies. The Highlands feature 790 lakes and 284 mountains, with isolated homes and ancient granite ruins adding to its charm. It’s a place of raw beauty.

In Gaelic Scotland, Uisge Beatha, the Water of Life, is a term few Scots are familiar with today, given that only about 1% of the population speaks the language. Nonetheless, Whisky remains unchanged and is deeply woven into Scottish history, culture, and economy.

The harsh climate and tough living conditions called for a drink that was both a universal medicine with herbs and honey, and a means of relaxation. Over a thousand years ago, monks introduced distillation to Scotland. Their Aqua Vitae was potent and likely quite different from modern Whisky, but it provided warmth and comfort.

Today, Whisky is a global business, enjoyed worldwide and financially benefiting Scotland. Annually, 96 million cases of Scotch Whisky are exported, which equals 40 bottles per second! This export generates over 1 billion euros in taxes each year, employs 35,000 people, and accounts for one-fourth of Britain’s food and beverage exports. Scottish Whisky outsells its Irish and American counterparts threefold and is more popular in France than Cognac.

Just like the French classify wines by region, the Scots classify their Whisky by the regions where it’s produced, each with its unique flavor profile. With two basic types of Whisky – Single Malt and Single Grain – and three types of blends – Blended Malt, Blended Grain, and Blended Whisky – there’s a huge variety, making it likely you’ll find a Whisky that suits your taste!
