Malta has a rich and eventful history, largely due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean between Europe and Africa. Over the centuries, it has been influenced by various cultures and empires, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Normans, Knights Hospitallers, Napoleon (for a brief period), and the British. Today, this small island is a popular vacation spot for both sun-seekers and history enthusiasts.
Though my travel group loves sun, history, and fun, we decided to visit Malta for a 10-day trip in February. Unfortunately, we quickly discovered that the island isn’t far enough south to provide the warm weather we crave. Needless to say, we weren’t thrilled about dealing with the cold!
In chilly weather, the best way to stay warm is to keep moving, so we decided to focus on exploring the island’s historical sites. Over the next few days, we plan to visit various attractions, including Mdina, which you might recognize as a filming location for Game of Thrones. We’ll also indulge in local cuisine (they have countless ways to prepare rabbit), sample the local wine, and join the Maltese in celebrating St. Paul’s Shipwreck Day and Carnival—expect lots of confetti!
Whether it’s raining or shining, Malta remains a wonderful place to visit.
