When we took a short trip to Lübeck, a medieval Hanseatic city in northern Germany that’s protected by UNESCO, it was great to warm up in one of its many cafés after our noses got cold and we couldn’t resist the tempting cakes.
Walking the cobblestone streets definitely made us hungry, so we enjoyed coffee, hot cocoa, and cake at the cozy Niederegger Café, which had a lovely view of the town square.
The medieval part of the city is easy to explore on foot. It’s situated on a small island in the river Trave and connected to the mainland by bridges. Some of these old bridges, like the famous Holstentor dating back to 1216, are still standing. There’s a museum inside the Holstentor that’s definitely worth a visit!
At the town square, there’s a skating rink where both young and old have fun skating to the latest pop songs while smelling roasted almonds in the air. We went at the beginning of the new year, so we missed the legendary Christmas Fair, but that just gives us a reason to come back!
